I don't get why the English speaking part of the world decided that Ὅμηρος: Homeros should be called Homer. That doesn't make sense. Same for Aristotle, who was called Aristoteles. So that was your opportunity to be a giant nerd and say, oh you plebeians meant Homeros...
Haha... Simple mistake! But you probably should've been able to figure out who they were talking about.
But the real Homer's name is pronounced differently because he was Greek... Didn't you hear the difference if you're a literature student?
