Today, I took a girl to a sushi restaurant for our first date. She insisted she's had sushi before, but I had to watch her struggle with the chopsticks for a few minutes before mercifully asking the waitress for a fork. She then ate a fork full of wasabi, thinking it was guacamole. I think there won't be a second date. FML

Maybe she was too shy to say that she hadn't? Some girls don't want to disappoint guys sometimes, so maybe she said yes because she knew you liked sushi?

At least she didn't mistake the wasabi for pistachio ice cream :P

Ask her to be honest with you next time you take her out

Where is the "she deserved it" button?

You're not gonna date her because she isn't good with Japanese food???

It's obvious OP thinks she doesn't like him anymore. Why does everyone think that OP is the one not wanting a second date?

"I've bought sushi at Kroger" is very different than "I've eaten at a sushi bar"

Op said that she insisted she'd had sushi before not that she said she's eaten at a sushi bar

Smartasses are funny. Or the opposite in this case. You can eat either store bought sushi, or from a bar/ restaurant and not know how to use chopsticks. The wasabi however, is so commonly known with it that it seems fishy. Sushi snobs are apparently a thing because it's expensive and that is really sad and funny. Try legit caviar if you want to act like a millionaire. The main point being, has she had SUSHI before period. Not with chopsticks, not wasabi. The food sushi. Fish and vegetables wrapped in seaweed and rice.

Aw don't be too hard on her , dates are always allot of pressure .

Am I the only one who thought he meant that she wouldn't want to go back out with him? Like, maybe she was nervous and couldn't get her hands to use the chopsticks right and hadn't yet experienced wasabi yet so she just tried to remedy the situation by stopping herself from saying something which wound up with her more embarrassed than before.... A bad date is a two way street. That's kinda what I thought op meant when I read it...

That's really judgemental. Our grocery store has a sushi counter and plenty of the items do not come with wasabi and are easily eaten with the fingers. Maybe she's not an expert on sushi but that doesn't mean she was lying. She just hasn't had a real authentic experience.

I could see a. him not wanting to date her because of the lie. I'm sure it's not because she can't use chopsticks guys. and b. maybe after the mouth full of wasabi she's a little to scared to date him. either way he didn't do anything wrong here. If anything he's generous sushi is not cheep. I need a man like this.

It's a white lie and who doesn't tell those on dates, especially a first date, to try to impress someone?
