Today, I took my 12 year-old to the orthodontist. While I was talking to the dentist about what was needing to be done, my daughter listened. With a straight face, the dentist joked, "Yeah, we're going to need to rip off her entire jaw." My daughter won't leave her room anymore. FML

Honestly, to all the ones saying the orthodontist is evil, my orthodontist said the same thing once. If you're 12, you should be able to tell it was a joke..Try to get your daughter to just go get it done, I had braces and other "appliances" in my mouth for almost five years. Get it over with.

heheeh i'm sure you did have appliances in your mouth

I can see why she would be a bit scared. Did the dentist not see he scared the snot out of your little girl? Maybe he should have said he was joking. Maybe you should tell your daughter he wasn't serious.

lol @ people crying about lawsuits, unprofessionalism, and finding a new orthodontist. How dramatic. It was a joke. Soon enough the 12-year-old will also realize this and emerge from her room. Or the OP will realize that she is the parent and just take the girl there. With me the dentist visit was much less horrible when my mother promised to get me ice cream, or a similar treat, afterwards.

No, it isn't...it's just a joke! OP should explain to his daughter so she can calm the hell down.

Oh come on, the girl is 12 not 5. She should know it's a joke. Really I'm more concerned that the girl thought he was serious.

ikr. im pretty sure a 12 year old would know its a joke, otherwise OP needs to do some parenting and teach their kid what a joke is

It's the dentist's version of Sweeney Todd!

I don't think someone would calm down after hearing that your jaw is going to be ripped off. Sounds like something out of the movie The Grudge.

Or Mirrors. That movie made me scared to look into a mirror for a month ;-;

I think it was stupid of the dentist. My sister isn't afraid of the dentist, but she's very scared of needles. Once, she was assigned a dentist I know likes to joke about managing to trap and break off a needle in a patients mouth, then having to take one of her teeth out. I called the dentist's office right away and had her switched to different one. You never know what people's secret fears are, and he might just have found one of hers.

Exactly; it's not real. Ripping her jaw out, is not real and no certified and sane orthodontist would ever do that, even if they could. You would expect a 12 year old girl to know deep down inside that this was all a joke and it was just to ride the psycho (german) doctor stereotype.
