Today, I took my two and a half year-old son Trick or Treating for the first time in our new neighborhood. At the very first house, a girl told us we were too early and slammed the door in our face. My son cried. FML

OP here! A lot of these comments are hilarious! Thanks for that and for those that showed us some support and sympathy. We started trick or treating at 5:15. Apparently trick or treating kicks up in our neighborhood around 6/6:30. Now I know. When I went trick or treating when I was younger, everyone started around 4 and people were prepared. Besides, how hard is it put some candy in a bowl? Also, some people commented about why a 2.5 year old needs candy, he doesn't, but we went for the experience. Luckily, we rebounded and had a fun Halloween after that incident.

How early were you? Yesterday we got a knock on the door at 3pm from someone asking for candy. My mom had just gone to the store to pick up some treats and we didn't have anything at the moment. I asked the kid and his mom to come back later, and she started to bitch at me for "not being prepared." My town has an ordinance that trick-or-treating start at 5:30pm and no earlier. Everyone who lives here knows this, because they hand out fliers and it has been like that for ten or more years. I closed the door on her and she pounded again, calling me a bitch. Now, I am sure Op was nice about it, but trick or treating usually starts during dusk and people don't have to give candy to your kid just because you ask. She was horribly rude, but the general rule of thumb is after dark and if the porch light is off they don't want to take part.

I had woman do that to me too, I told her bad people get no candy and to please go away

We also had a kid try to take a huge handful from the bowl. We usually hand the kid the candy, and he tried to rip the bowl from our hands, pretty much. We told him to leave and that greedy kids get no candy. He was 11. I don't understand why people get so upset about halloween.

I think I would get sad to, especially since I would have to share face with my parent.

Wow, welcome to the neighborhood huh? Now your son knows which house to egg/toilet paper when he's old enough!

How awful, she needs to be bitch slapped for hurting your kid's feelings, it is never okay to slam a door in someone's face.

No one needs to be abused or harmed because they didn't give a toddler candy. I am sure Op was nice about it, but there are tons of reasons why she acted the way she did. She could have been trying to get her kids ready, had a bad day at work, or been bothered by ten other people taking their kids out. Op might have ignored her porch light being off, the town ordinance for trick-or-treat times, or been super early. Maybe Op took their kid out at 2pm. We don't know why she did what she did. Heck, she might have had a door that is heavy and sounds like it slams. The kid is also two. He will never remember this unless Op brings it up again.

And that's when you go through the back window to get her to give your son candies. Like Big Daddy.

I'm sorry that was his 1st experience. I hope he wasn't too upset to continue trick or treating. Maybe take him out for ice cream so he still feels like he's getting a treat?

I can understand if she didn't have candy or for some reason their is a trick-or- treat time ordinance where Op lives, but you never slam a door in a two year olds face...poor kiddo hope the rest of the houses were nice.

I refused to hand out candy until the sun went down. And my porch light was off. People seem to have forgotten that rule, it seems. Especially here.
