Clearly they don't respect him or they wouldn't have done that. Inviting yourself to dinner on someone else's tab is not a respectful move. FYL Two semi-unrelated comments: 1. $95 for four people seems a fair price, not the price of a "fancy" meal. Probably more than a secondary school student can afford easily though. 2. I thought dinner was served at prom. Is that not the case?
