OP probably should have checked the note first and just simply told the student to put it away instead of being so rash, but the student still should not have had anything in his hand in the first place. Seriously, who WOULDN'T have at least initially suspected that as being cheating? As the few decent people here have said, it could have been a form of cheating for all we know. And seriously, I highly doubt, if the student is in least high school or college, that he will seriously be traumatized by this.
