Don't feel bad, I've had the same thing. I had a lady come through my checkout one Christmas and I asked her what she was doing for Christmas and she replied with"Oh, my daughter died last year so Christmas isn't a very happy time for us"...she could have said "not much". It's so annoying >.<
honestly it's not ur fault. u were being polite plus if she buys chips and sodas it's so obvious that ur going think its a party, dont feel bad u were being nice.
Should have invited Pinkie Pie.
So embarrassing

Just quickly say, "I'm sorry to hear that ma'am." However it sounds like the people who replied never actually been to a funeral. Afterwards they usually have a small gathering of people. They usually serve stuff like sandwhich and stuff and people talk, then they leave. It's not a "pig out" as suggested by some people. Think: sad party.
It's called making small talk.
