Today, I was chatting online with a guy I really like, when he used the word "irregardless." I couldn't help but mention how little sense it makes, since it's a combination of two words meaning roughly the same thing. He replied, "lol what? your stupid." Jesus Christ. FML

Some people just don't want to admit they're wrong.

Well you're both wrong. It's not the combination of two words, its the combination of a word and a prefix, and when people use the word irregardless, which is an actual word, it just means the opposite of what everybody uses it to mean. What they mean to say, is regardless, not irregardless

I don't know why you were thumbed down when you actually correct so I rectified that.

As did I, it.was a perfectly reasonable statement. A prefix meaning 'without' added to a word that means 'without regard' just means 'regard'. That word drives me nuts.

Dictionary definition ...Irregardless means the same as regardless, but the negative prefix ir- merely duplicates the suffix -less, and is unnecessary. The word dates back to the 19th century, but is regarded as incorrect in standard English.

Thats when you go and look for a different guy to chat with. Your obviously far more intelligent than he is.

Your explanation kind of sucked. The real problem with "irregardless" is that it is a double negative. Both the "ir-" prefix and the "-less" suffix negate the root word. If the word existed, it would be the opposite of "regardless."

Well if he was your boyfriend he would kinda be your stupid. Luckily you discovered this problem early. (:

It's a double negative --> with regard to.

Irregardless is a reference to Mean Girls. I'd say you have keeper.
