Today, I was chatting online with a guy I really like, when he used the word "irregardless." I couldn't help but mention how little sense it makes, since it's a combination of two words meaning roughly the same thing. He replied, "lol what? your stupid." Jesus Christ. FML

Some people just don't want to admit they're wrong.

I love when stupid people claim another is stupid for being smart, while they're just ignorant.

Clearly, this one is a dolt, but in the future, sometimes it's best to resist grammatical impulses when you're talking to someone you like. At least over things that aren't blatantly and/or willfully ignorant. Even then, it weeds out a lot of people quickly. (Which is a good thing, I don't suffer fools, but I hide my linguistic bent at first so people know it's not judgement. Most of the time.)

So you know that "irregardless" is not a proper word, but you do not know the difference between "you're" and "your."

I think the point is that that was the other guy's response, and that the other guy doesn't know any grammar...

Yes, she does. Read the FML again; she was quoting the guy she was chatting with.

I made an account simply to say what you just said...

My bad. I did miss the part about it being an online chat as opposed to a verbal chat. My apologies to the OP :)

27- Op does understand the difference, she was quoting the guy for inproperly using Your over You're, and that was the reason for her Jesus Christ, followed by a mental face palm. ;)

There's no way to know if he used "your" or "you're." Op stated it was a chat. It wasn't a written conversation. So I do believe that op was wrong in writing "your" when quoting him.

119- "Online Chat" generally refers to typing messages in a chat room...

I have a friend who says words incorrectly all the time. I'm polite enough to keep my mouth shut. You could've probably made it less complicated for him if you had simply said it wasn't a word.

But it is a word, just an informal word that makes no sense. If it's someone I like and planned on being with then I wouldn't want to dumb things down (for lack of a better term) , as I would expect that person to either a) understand me or b) not act like a child and call me stupid. It's not like she pulled out some serious rocket science, she just explained a word.

While irregardless is generally considered to be a non-existent word, its contextual use in speech does justify its existence. But your friends other, really annoying error and blatant arrogance is definitely a deal breaker.

It's a double negative and thus makes very little or no sense when used. It nullifies what you are trying to say. It's like saying you don't have regard for the regard you don't have. Ir and less. It's worse when you call someone stupid for pointing it out as what happened to the OP. (the guy did)

I understand the double negative business. However, there are many constructions in language that a given word might not obey. The form of a word doesn't necessarily determine its meaning. Rather, the repeated use of a certain word in a specific context assigns meaning to the word. For example, ginormous is a combination of two words, but its prefixes, roots and sufixes dont really contribute to the words meaning. The use of the word in context of describing something large is what assigns it meaning. I have no clue why irregardless came to be because you're definitely correct in saying it is sensless given its construction. But it's been used in replacement of regardless often enough to grant it synonymity.

I agree with #19 but still you didnt have to say anything especially of you really like this guy

Sadly enough, dictionaries are now including this bastard love-child of irrespective and regardless, so people now think it's a real word. They gloss over the label of "non-standard." You have to feel out people before you correct their grammar. Some people want to get it right, so they'll appreciate your help. Otherwise, blow it off and enjoy your cute, stupid boyfriend.

If he said "YOUR stupid", I would reply like "Yes. There are you and me. Someone is stupid here. And it is not me." - excuse me, if there are some mistakes, I am not English speaking /first language/, but "YOUR stupid"...eh...

Typical response to "Your stupid." is "My stupid what?" because instead of saying "you are stupid," the person is saying "the stupid that belongs to you" as in "don't forget YOUR towel." But yes, he is the stupid one, and you seem to be pretty good at the whole English thing. :)
