Today, I was discussing the possibility of other life in the universe with my friend. She said the universe isn't big enough for it to be possible, and that we would know about it already, because "there are only 8 planets in the universe." FML

In some informal circles, the term "universe" is used interchangeably with "solar system." I know it's incorrect, but we used to say "Russia" for "Soviet Union." Unless technology makes some leaps (which may happen), we will almost certainly never know about any life outside the solar system.

"in this society" what are you talking about? That is how it has always been everywhere. not literally, of course. I'm sure there are exceptions. Still, it is only natural for humans to see an excellent mating partner as equal or superior to a human with a sharp mind.

Theres PLENTY more planets in our solar system. Does anyone remember Ceres? They were declassifying planets WAAAY before pluto not to mention 2003UB (aka Xena) and god only knows how many KBOs(kuiper belt objects) there are out there that are big enough to be planets/dwarf planets/planetoids.(notes in parenthesis for people like OPs friend who don't know any better :D)
