Today, I was driving on the highway and a cop had his radar gun out. The woman in front of me panics and slams her brakes on, causing me to rear end her. The cop cited me for "tailgating" and I have to pay for the damages on both of our cars. FML

Thats the technical definition of tailgating. If you're so close to the other car that in a situation in which the car in front of you suddenly breaks, and you rear end the car in front of you, that would be tailgating. Really, what do you think tailgating is if its not exactly the situation you're in now?

I cant stand people who slam on their brakes whenever they see a cop. Especially when the dudes on the other side of the highway

Sorry, but YDI. I know she should not have hit her brakes so hard, but you shouldn't have been that close to her either. Keep a safe and clear distance. That means one car per 10 mph. I've had friends 'accidentally' hit their brakes because 'they saw a kid/saw a dog' and they needed a car repair anyway.

I love all these idiots who are like, oh you should have been farther away. Right, because it's our job as drivers to pay attention to every move a person in front of us makes, even when they abruptly stop because they are breaking the law.

you probably were tailgating you ********

you probably were tailgating, if you were far enough away and paying attention you could've avoided this. more than likely anyway.

#118: That's exactly what I'm saying!! For all we know, he was far enough away, but a person SUDDENLY STOPPING on a HIGHWAY when you're going 65+ makes it hard to stop as quickly when you get closer and finally realize that some moron just stopped in the middle of the highway. Unless of course...he's leaving out an important detail: Did she stop because she was break checking due to tailgating? Cause if that's the case then yeah, YDI. Otherwise, it's possible that he wasn't tailgating at all.

if you didn't have enough time to break then you weren't paying attention and/or were, in fact, tailgating her. YDI

#89: I live in LA, and I don't follow the 2 second rule religiously. However, if I rear ended someone and got ticketed for it, I would totally deserve it. I know that no one follows that rule, but I'm not going to bitch if I get caught. I take the chance, and deserve it if I get caught.

if you hit the car in front of you, THEN THERE WASNT ENOUGH ROOM FOR YOU TO STOP, AND YOU WWEERRREEE TAILGATING!!! do you know what tailgating means?

YDI, tailgaters are the worst, asshole.

YDI, even if she did slam on her breaks, almost any accident is avoidable. You have to be aware of your surroundings, to save yourself from assholes like the woman in front of you. Yeah, it sucks, but that's life.
