Congrats, I would have done the exact same thing. Hell, if it got me fired, oh well. Sure it would b hard to did another job, but I would do it. Power to you for throwing their measly change back. But then, maybe you were a bad waiter, because I've tipped a small amount for a bad waiter.
What a family of assholes. Probably wasn't the best idea for keeping your job, but they definitely deserved to be called out for their behavior. I hope someone broke into their car while they were in the restaurant, it would be right.
While I don't agree with the throwing quarters at them, I can definitely understand your outrage. I probably would have lost my job with that as well. On a bill like that, if your job is like mine (I'm a waitress as well) you'd be forced to claim almost $100 in tips you'd never received, reducing your check to nothing. For those of you who don't know what it's like to get paid very little an hour, and still get taxed on the tips you make, it seriously SUCKS. Especially when a table like that would take a ridiculous amount of service. You'll find a better job, one that adds a gratuity for large parties hopefully! Good luck, and don't let people who don't understand bring you down. Serving sometimes means getting treated like shit, but some days it's not so bad!
In Canada the wait staff are also paid less than minimum wage. But that won't stop me from not tipping when I receive poor service. Tipping is a reward for good service. Has anyone thought that maybe op provided them with poor service? Yes, it's understandable that bigger tables will take longer to get the orders out but if op was rude, missed orders, ignored the table, and did not check in with the table periodically then they deserve their shitty tip. However, if op provided stellar service, then yes it's unfortunate about the tip. But still not an excuse to assault them with change.
Honestly, I would love to do the same thing since people have left me PENNIES before. But I didn't because I didn't want to lose my job. However, for those who don't know what's it like in the waitressing world. Feel free to join us. But don't join the ones that pay you a crap load (Like Wingers for an example from what I heard). Of course, it varies by state / restaurant. But for me, who works at a small but popular buffet, I make $3.50 per hour. Not the $7.25 but $3.50. My checks every two weeks are 130-150. And I work full time. I'll admit, I hate the cheapskates but sometimes I don't mind since I know I'm not a perfect waitress and therefore sometimes I think I don't deserve a good tip. So before assume that they're the bad ones, I make sure I wasn't the bad waitress. But I would have to say YDI just because of the fact that you did throw it at them. Which shows how unprofessional you are (even if they were very crappy tippers). Not only does it show how poor the customer service is at your restaurant but it also shows that you were just being as rude as they were. But either way considering the bill was over $700, it must have been a fairly "fancy" restaurant and must have had very good tippers. So I hope those people were worth losing your job. Next time that you might work at a restaurant and if they leave you a small tip just say or think something like, "Thank you for your business." Since it's thanks to them that you get a paycheck.
Also I wanted to mention that one time in my friend's family restaurant, there was a similar thing that happened. The waitress had about only 7 people on one table but their tip was $0.75. Even though their bill was only around 60-70 dollars, she got very pissed off. She didn't throw it back at them but rather (after she found out) she went out to them (they were still by their car) and said, "I believe you dropped your change." And forced it into their hands showing that she was mad but she did it at least in a polite way.

they probably should've left a better tip, but at the same time you can't throw quarters at a customers head and not expect to be fired.
For them to leave only 50 cents it was clearly as an insult to the waitress imo.
