Today, I was working as a waitress at this pub. It was dead. After 4 hours I had only made 5$ in tips. A friendly couple came in and complimented EVERYTHING down to the freshness of the lemons in their tea. The bill came to $50. They left me a $5 gift card to starbucks. I don't drink coffee. FML

Well, there's tea and pastries there, too, yanno. I always get a Chai when I go there. No reason to be completely thankless.

Ooh, burn! I was tipped with toothbrushes once. Hey cool, number 1 =D

What the heck? Don't you have your own wage? NO ONE where I live tips. No one. Only those really, kind, exceptional people, and when I do get a tip I get a warm feeling in my heart knowing there's still some kindness in the world. Seriously. A waiter's job may be hard, but it doesn't warrant a tip. The meal itself was expensive enough. What about this situation: A couple have their anniversary. They're poor, but they decide to celebrate anyway since it was such a special occasion. Would they tip you? I don't think so. Since when was tipping obligatory? Although, since I live in a different country, it may be a different matter (i.e if your wage is like $1 an hour an most of your income is from tips, I can't blame you.) ...And even if that were the case, you should be grateful that you even have a job. Hello, recession? ...Still can't blame you though, if that were the case. But you should honestly count your blessings. Also, #83 wins.

they do have stuff besides coffee...

Starbucks also has other things, so it's not that bad, you know?

You never know. It could've been the manager or something. I have heard of them stealing plenty of tips. Either way, that tea... What is it? Passionfruit? Delicious!!

#140: Tipping IS optional here in the UK, that's because our minimum wage laws apply to waiting staff just as equally as anyone else; they DO get a living wage from their job, just the same as any other minimum-wage profession. Your country would be smart to do the same. Tipping should be for exceptional above-and-beyond service, not part of paying for regular service. You'll be surprised, in fact, if you stepped outside of your own insulated culture once in a while; for example, you don't tip in Japan, and in some European countries it's considered rude to tip.

Sounds like someone needs a new job that isn't supplemented with tips or a commission. As for the customers eating at McDonald's instead, less customers means less waitstaff. Then they can be out of a tip and a job. So yeah, FYL for having a crappy job. Quit!

#108: If you were earning £3 an hour, then that must have been many years ago; because minimum wage is currently £5.73 for over 22 year olds, £4.77 for 18-21 uyear olds, and £3.53 for under 18s. To put that into perspective, in dollars £3 is currently $4.80 American, and £5.73 is $9.40 American. In dollars, Britain has the highest national minimum wage in the world...and we don't have the highest living expenses in the world.

To all of those who think 10% gratuity is a "generous" tip, you're clueless. The fact we're in recession is moot: If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out. Period. Servers in Texas make $2.13/hr. That's their income. You cheapos.
