Today, I went to college, where I'm studying for my dream job. Despite getting up at 5am to catch the earliest bus into town, I arrived ten minutes late. My professor knows my circumstances, but is still threatening to kick me off the course if I don't "arrive on time like everyone else." FML

I know it sucks, but if he makes an exception for you he'll have to make one for everyone else. Maybe you could carpool with a classmate?

The way I see it is if someone else, such as someone who has similar problems to yours, can get there on time so can you. A bus is no excuse to any professor of good standing. They'll just say walk faster or drop the class for a more feasible time slot. There's more than just you studying for a dream job and it pisses the other students off to be disrupted during lecture. If you know you're going to be late, don't go and emaik classmates for notes.

Talk to the Dean or drop the class and get a different professor

Cars are expensive. And if you could take a later class or get a place close to campus, you would have already. The best suggestion I saw here was to get a bike. Or, **** it, drop his course and take it another semester.

OP, I work overnight and explain to my professors of my situation. I had one last semester that didn't care one bit. I took it to the Dean and was able to prove I had no choice than to be late sometimes to class due to my job and job position. needless to say I got an apology and a little slack.

Actually he has no authority to do that. You pay for the class it is your choice on when to show up. No matter what he says you would win in the end.

It's OP's choice whether to show up or not, but students can't just come an go as they please during class disturbing the other students. What if everyone did that? I taught at a university and it gets really annoying when someone comes in late and then you have to stop teaching to get them handouts etc. Maybe not a big deal if it is occasional and the student tries to be quiet. I was pretty lenient about it but can totally understand why other teachers say No.

If you can't follow the rules don't take the class. Stop blaming everyone else for your problems.

Usually there is more than one of the same course in any given college, unless you go to a rather small one

That's true for things like intro psychology and English 101, but many schools have only one section of each upper level class. Other than foreign languages and intro English my school almost never have multiple sections of a class.

A lot of higher level classes are only offered once a year.

He's challenging you to overcome adversity. If you can find a way, you will become a better person.

The best option is moving to a place closer to college. Buying a car is another option but expensive. For now, you don't have any other option than leaving earlier, if you can.

Leaving earlier isn't going to solve much if the buses don't.

consider this OP, and everyone who agrees the Prof is being unfair. Upon completing college and landing your dream job if you were to be late daily by as little add five minutes you would be fired. I'm sure there is some way available to you to make this class, arrange for a ride, sleep on a buddy's couch, taxi. College is meant to prepare you for the real world and no one in the real world cares why you are late.
