A lot of Japanese characters came from Chinese they are called Kanji in Japanese. That is why sometimes a Chinese person that don't speak / write any Japanese can pick up meaning of Japanese word here and there.

Japanese people use a form called "kanji" which is basically Chinese letters.... Society really needs to up the education budget nowadays....

actually most characters (or symbols as you call them) are universal between Japan and China with slight differences in style and pronunciation.

I think someone may have said this already, but just so you know Japanese characters, or Kanji, are mostly the same as Chinese characters.

Was it kanji? Because if it was Japanese uses Chinese kanji but in most cases they are used for different sounds. If it was hiragana or katakana your teacher is an idiot. I doubt she can't read her own language though...

I hope you know Japanese people use Chinese lettering. They just mean different things
