Today, it's my 18th birthday. My parents got me a $5 gift certificate to iTunes. It came for free with the iPhone they just bought my sister for her middle school graduation. FML

#64: yeah... i didn't get a cell phone until i started driving at age 18.... which is basically the only time i needed a cell phone. you don't need a cell phone if you're not able to go anywhere besides school, home, and anywhere within biking distance. And if your parents drive you to a friends house... guess what? THEY HAVE A PHONE THERE! #63: i've seen a lot of acronyms... but not that one. #32: yeah.... it's not "your generation". It's parents being extremely overprotective and also spoiling kids. HATE seeing anyone that's still in the grade school age.... except maybe 11th or 12th grade, since it'd easily possible that one can drive by then.... with phones. especially brand new phones that wind up costing more than anything else they carry around with them combined. I'm 24, and my latest phone purchase about a year ago was a Motorola Q9. Why did i get a MotoQ? cause i liked the style of it. Yes, i like the style of the iPhone, but you wouldn't catch me dead with any of the social status backing devices Apple makes. People don't buy Apple products because they're the greatest out there. they don't buy them because they're cheap (HA!). They buy them cause they're advertised out the wang, and people think that's all that's out there. I also don't own, and never will own, an iPod. I'd much rather spend like $350-400 for an Archos media player that offers a larger screen and more playback options, plus doesn't require the HEADACHE known as iTunes to do anything with it, nor does the Archos make it damn near impossible to retrieve music from the device once it's on it.

why the **** does your little sister have an iPhone for middle school graduation?

Steal your sister's iPhone, sell it and then buy yourself a birthday present ;D

#70: I think phones are useful even for preteens, BUT should be used when necessary, not for stupid things like texting their BFFs across the room. And parents shouldn't buy them fancy expensive phones unless they really earned it.

Assuming it's true, it's quite possible that they bought the phone for the sister last year. The economy sucks this year. I'm in a relatively recession proof industry (****, yes I know I self promote too much ;)) and even WE are having to watch our money. Times are tough for almost everyone. Maybe the parents could afford the phone last year...and this year they simply can't afford a gift. I know last Christmas I recycled some gifts, and got very creative to hide how I was economically. So did a lot of people i know. And at least we had a Xmas, I know some who simply didn't. Welcome to adulthood. Your parents aren't gods and maybe money is really tight. You still live there right? Be glad they're not asking you to pay rent. ;)

#76 i agree, i just think it's dumb that kids these days get everything they want, they don't know the meaning of manners. Cellphones COULD be useful, but I think most preteens don't use them for those reasons. --this is #70.
