I actually thought that that was funny and cute. It's like in Knocked Up when Ben gives the girl the empty box, but is really sincere with everything that he wants to commit to her and promises her that he will fill the box with the ring that she deserves someday. It may suck for the time being, but he has the intent and that is what matters!

You should just be happy somebody loves you enough to want to be in a commited relationship with you. I think it's kind of sweet, and funny. I would say yes to a person who asked me that way, it's so cute! Being upset that you weren't proposed to with an expensive piece of jewelery is kind of snobby, just enjoy the fact that someone loves you!
