One of my dad's friends proposed to his girlfriend with a ring from a crackerjack box because he was a student and couldn't afford anything else. She thought it was sweet and said yes. Eventually he was able to afford a real ring, and now they've been married for more than 20 years. Think about it.
Honestly, I hope you said no, just because it seems too much like a spur of the moment thing. If he can't think ahead of time about a cute, creative way to propose to you without seeming like a five year old, then you deserve better.
It is adorable. With OP's attitude, the poor guy was probably afraid to pick out a real ring himself because she'd probably hate it. I'm sure he'll want to pick it out together. Best of luck to him, sounds like he has his handful.
