It is possible it caught him off guard, but I doubt it He should be able to tell to you some of the things he appreciates about you besides that. Some people emotionally are very deep others not so much. If you want that in your relationship it could be a sign to look elsewhere. Guys that aren't into romance aren't going to change and become romantic same goes with stuff like this.
