It's not that obvious. The US is the only country as far as I know to use m/d/y, so there is no real reason for the rest of the world to see the correlation unless they are used to the American way of doing things.

I for one wouldn't consider him my boyfriend if I didn't hear from him in a month. Even if you are in a distance relationship and don't have the chance to see eachother whenever you want, you should atleast have a brief conversation a day?
