If you had the cats before you had him, then just get rid of him. He was terrible to make such an ultimatum. If you got the cats after you got him though, well...there should have been some sort of communication going on with that. I have a dog and I would never choose a person over him (if given an ultimatum, I mean), so I kind of know how you feel.

I completly agree with you sounds like you two met up not too long ago. Plus he made you give a decision when there is medication for that kind of stuff. You can get a guy any time you want and if you give away your cats, who knows he could dump you a week later and you won't have either.
