To be fair, winning a contest does not necessarily mean either of you are ready for marriage. Though his selling it instead of locking it in a safe deposit box indicates that he really needs the cash or doesn't see himself being ready anytime in the near future either.

Wouldn't you rather him get a more personalized and meaningful ring than one he just happened to win in a competition?
