I remember when I had a similar situation. I would be hanging out with friends in real life, and when someone said a joke I would think "LOL" and really have no change in expression. As if it wasn't bad enough I looked like I had no sense of humor for the forced delayed laugh that followed (cause I just LOL'd, right?) I realized something else. I was lying to all my online friends. I wasn't laughing out loud at all. v_v

YDI if you do it ALL the time. Learn to implement sarcasm and wit into your lols. That's the only way to use it offline.
