#30 said it best with "It's just a respect thing, as well as feeling out whether or not your in-laws aren't totally going to hate you. The girl can still say yes or no." If the dad says no, hopefully you can have a mature discussion about why, and regardless of yes or no, the girl; still gets a say in it. If the girl is estranged from her parents and doesn't give a flying **** whether they think yes or no, then yeha, probably not going to support it. Otherwise, bitching about the original purpose of it dating back to biblical times is superfluous - in the modern age, it's still a widespread tradition, but only because it's considered a sign of respect to ask the parents. Dara O'Briain's live at the Theatre Royal has some good explanation on why it's nice.
the girl still gets a say.... Umm spongebob, you do realize that this marriage we're talking about. The girl should have a 50% say in it, and she is not getting a 50 percent say if you ask her parents permission for marriage. Do the math: any more than 2 people involved in deciding if you can be married, and you can't have a 50 percent say. And the concept of it being done because women don't know whats best for them didn't go out in biblical times - it was still the reasoning used in the 1960s. I realize thats biblical times for someone who enjoys spongebob, but in reality, thats not ancient history at all
i think it was so nice of you to ask her dad's permission it's a mildly antiquated gesture but still adorable and shows that you care. really sorry it didn't work out that just sucks she must be a jerk.
aww you sound sweet :) poor guy. ...I'm single~

Oh poor thing I'm sorry. But at least you knew how she felt before you actually proposed.
At least this happened instead of her cheating on you with this guy down the road, leading to a long and painful divorce.
