It's not creepy. It's entirely possible he glanced over or was walking by and saw it. Bedrooms are allowed to be in the front of the house, and there are homes built very close to each other. Ever been in a city? It's so annoying when people are so critical of FMLs.

Or, it could be an apartment (which most have the same carpet in the whole house), and he was trying to make small talk. Still a tad creepy, but he may have been talking just about the bedroom carpet in general.
