By HELP - This FML is from back in 2012 but it's good stuff - United States

Today, I moved into a new house. The landlord insists it's OK for her to come up whenever she wants because she owns the house. We aren't allowed to lock the doors and she has two 8-year-olds. They come into the bathroom every time they hear the shower running. We have a clear shower curtain. FML

No. No it's not okay. If I'm not mistaken that's illegal for her to do.

Put a chair in front of the door. That will keep them out. It's not a lock...

Start looking for a new place and prepare to sue. Lock the doors anyway. Change the locks if possible. Also buy a new shower curtain.

its illegal and a violation of privacy. they can request to go inside to inspect for stuff but not without u being there or allowing them.in

What she's doing it illegal. Due to the breach of the implied warnty of habitability and your right to quiet enjoyment, you can either move out without being responsible for the remaining rent, or you can take her to court and have her legally forced to stop coming in, along with a possible reduction of your rent. While you rent the space it is yours for all intents and purposes. For her to come in is trespassing. Lock the doors, if she tries to throw you out or complain, take her to court.

This can't be real? Seriously of course a landlord can't do that if you have an agreement to stay there and are paying money!

Seriously, that is messed up. Tenents have rental rights and yours are being violated if your landlord insists she can walk in whenever she wants. She is obligated to give you a minimum of 24 hours notice if she needs to come into the property for whatever reason. Court is a viable option to protect your rights [it goes on the record your landlord is nuts, especially if you have proof] and any judge would side with you. As for the 8 year olds, lock the bathroom door and get another shower curtain. [or try to scare the crap out of them, whatever works]

Oh my... Haha a clear shower curtain haunted most of my childhood. I praise the day we got colored, non-see through shower curtains.

No landlord is allowed to do that and its up to you whether you lock your bathroom door or not. you need to have a serious chat with this person

YDI for owning a clear shower curtain.
