Scared the shit out that dog.
Gotta blame the trainer for this one. You were only following an experts advice.
I'd be pissed off with the trainer for such shitty advice. Now your poor pup is probably going to be scared shitless every time it hears a loud jingling noise now. Training a new pup is not a task to be pissed on lightly and it will take a crap load of loving and positive reinforcement before she learns where its ok to go.
Get a new trainer. That's the old way, and definitely not the way to teach them. Ignore the bad and reward the good. I'm a dog trainer. This works, I promise!
Ignoring the bad and rewarding the good works. But it's not as effective as positive and negative reinforcement together. Not everyone wants six months of the dog pissing in the house while waiting for it to discover on its own where the proper spot is. I train hunting dogs, and they are all yard trained by 8 weeks (I put the house pets up for sale at 12 weeks and train the proper hunting dogs for another 3 months).
The trainer told you that? Huh... Next time buy training pads and place it around the house, and keeping moving it towards the door. Next time you catch her/him say no and put the puppy outside. Remember to put your pup outside an hour after its gone to bathroom. I hope this helps you, sorry to hear you scared the shit out of your pup
The puppy, 1 and 2. You a -3. Point and game.
You should try crate training. That is the simplest, most effective way to house train a puppy I've ever used. It also allows your puppy to trust you ("If I whine I will be taken outside then praised.") rather than fear you. And it gives more opportunity for positive reinforcement rather than catching puppy in the act and correcting the behavior, negatively.
I thought a shake can is only for destructive behavior? Chewing, barking, etc... that way you immediately break their concentration. I was.. Doing something, now just standing outside. Remember: dogs only live in the moment. Use that shake can wisely!!
