Puppy training

Today, I walked in on my new puppy peeing on the carpet. The trainer had told me to punish her when she's bad by shaking a metal can of pennies at her, since the noise scares dogs. I shook it at her, and she responded by having explosive diarrhea all over the carpet in fright. FML

That's a bad tip you are suppose to tell them no several times and put the. Outside for a few minutes and reward her with treats when heuses the potty mate

That's so stupid! You just scare the dog. Your trainer is stupid as well. Don't punish her, just take her outside or wherever you prefer her to pee and clean it up. She'll learn not to be afraid of your craziness and where the right place is.

ignoring a dog is negitive punishment not reinforcement negitive being the taking away of something and positive adding something reinforcement being to encourage a behavior and punishment being to discourage a behavior. And it is all R+ training. You are throwing out arguments you know nothing about. Op your trainer should have told you to use a stern "no" and to pick the puppy up and put her in the propper potty place then reward her if she finishes. +punishment "no" +reinforcement "treat" and yes I am a pet trainer in not only r+ but also many other methods and catagories.

Your not much of a dog trainer if you think 'no' to a dog is a negative....

Thank you, No. 140. Today's asshole dog 'trainers' think treating the dog like it's royalty and not correcting it is the thing to do. So we have untrained dogs and 'pet parents' who are scared shitless to tell their 'fur babies' that NO, it is NOT OK to piss the carpet. They'd rather live in dog piss and shit-covered homes than upset their dogs. WTF, since when is saying 'no' abusive? All you're doing is correcting the dog and telling him that he screwed up and it is not acceptable. Beating the daylights out of him for pissing the carpet is abuse; telling him "NO" for pissing the carpet is teaching him acceptable behavior.

Mom's dogs really dislike water. A teaspoon's worth of water spilled over them is enough to make them do anything I want. Which is usually to get out of the way.

This has me cracking up. Thanks OP!

To be fair you probably could have done better by walking it before you headed out...

Actually there was a slow change from negitave only training to positave only training. Positive only isn't correct. It is socially correct, politically correct. When you show me a dog that understands PCness THEN it has a place in training. But untill then... A proper mix of negative and positive is needed to correctly train a dog. Done correctly a dog can be house trained in less the 2 days. Positive only will take much much longer then that and depending on the methods used is actually quite traumatizing for the dog. As the OP has found out.

Stupid people. I see stupid people everywhere. Not one person that has commented on this had any idea of proper dog training, or how a dogs mind works. Done correctly a dog will be house trained in less then 2 days. Quite possibly only 1 day depending on the circumstances. And that dog, until it dies, will never toilet in a house.

You called my methods stupid, yet I managed to train two rescue dogs within a matter of days. One wasn't house trained and one exhibited aggressive and possessive behaviour when I received them. Both dogs are now very loyal and well trained; all unwanted behaviour diminished. So, clearly my methods aren't as 'stupid' as you so claim.

I never called your methods stupid. I called your methods outdated and incorrect. If you are going to have a go at me get your insults right. I'm not denying that positive only training can work. If can and does, but it is slow and causes alot of unneeded and unnecessary stress in the dog. Your training of those dogs would have only taken hours if you had done it right.

Hey guys, OP here! Just wanted to let anyone who's curious know that our puppy--her name is Daisy, by the way--is doing a lot better. We fired the trainer, as many people advised, and now we take her outside frequently and give her treats when she goes to the bathroom on the street. It seems to be working, no more peeing inside so far!!

Oh my god, the image in my head is funny as hell. Having this image while reading it over is excellent!

Yeah, it wasn't quite as funny in person, lol :)
