Today, while on my driving test, the guy told me to pull over and do a U-turn. A few minutes later, he asked me to do another one. After the test, he said I'd failed because the second U-turn was illegal, and I should have refused to comply. I didn't know they're even allowed do that. FML

Why would he let you take an illegal turn, or even suggest it in the first place? Sounds to me like someone has to reread their job description

Well now you can just turn around and do it again

It's an abuse of power, obviously they're miserable bc they job is shit, so they try to play up the job description, use their "power" incorrectly. Hopefully though, no one can ever play you like that again

You seem to have quite some issues there, young lady. How many times did they fail you?

I know in our country they aren't allowed to do that. You dhould go ask his boss orr whatever...

I'm in the UK and personally don't see anything wrong with this. I've heard of instructors asking people to try and go down one way streets to see if they really know the road they will be driving on. My instructor never asked me to do anything like this but know it can happen. In my personal opinion you shouldn't do your test on a road you don't know, and you should really know where u turns are illegal and where they aren't.

You're absolutely right #76 same goes in my country…the examiner gives you several tasks to do and some of them are wrong too…but you have to know that and act accordingly…getting a driving license isn't that easy in my country ?

It would be nice to be able to ask to only drive on familiar roads, but here you go where you're told, and do everything you're told, exactly as they tell you to, or you fail.

#135 I didn't ask to drive in familiar roads and went where I was told but my lessons had been around the same area as that is where the test area is and it's only common sense that they would take you around that area. If you think about it there will only be certain test areas in certain areas they aren't going to ask you to drive 30+ minutes to another area as tests only last 35-40 minutes here. I can imagine in the states they must have more driving centres than we do so I would not imagine it would be impossible to find one that isn't hours away and even if it was you would have to go and test there so surely you could ask to go and drive around the area a couple of times on lessons? Either way rules of the road are rules of the road regardless of whether you are on a familiar road or not.

Not everybody has a DMV in their town though. It's not always possible to practice in the place you'll be having your test.

Legally a driving instructor can *NOT* give you a misguided direction to do an illegal driving maneuver. Whatever this dude did could get in some big trouble..

It's amazing how many people here know the law where OP lives - especially as the FML doesn't even state his country. And he's not a driving instructor, he's an examinator. Very different.

To test your knowledge ?! Question safety and not just do as you are told / don't let friends do this to you either. It's your own fault.

I don't know where OP is from, but where I'm at, you'll fail the test if you don't listen to the instructor. Also, the instructor won't tell you to do something you're not supposed to do. It seems like reckless gamble to me, especially considering they could listen to the false instructions and cause an accident. Anyways, that really sucks OP, best luck to you next time!:)

Except this wasn't op's instructor, this was the driving test. Why do people feel the need for this to be easy? If op can't read a simple sign or has the ability to say a simple 'no', what makes you think it's safe to give this person a license?

#93 do you suddenly not have a person telling you what to do whilst doing your driving test? or are you supposed to automatically know what they want you to do? im 99.9% sure the person assessing the driver is still instructing them on where to turn, do a u-turn, whatever. instructing = instructor.

Where I am from, and it seems where a LOT of people are from as it keeps coming up, the person testing you is referred to as an "Instructor". It is not implying that they were teaching you, it is simply a job title.

Here they can ask you to turn right, and then there is a sign you're not allowed to. My instructor warned me about a few of those places, so I was prepared.

Don't know how It is handled in your country, but here in Germany the Instructions are usually formulated like: "At the next oppurtunity, do this and that". So for example if the instruction is "Take a left turn at the next oppurtunity" you have to check if the next intersection allows left turns. If it doesn't you fail, obviously.
