Today, I found out that the piece of vacant land I purchased for $20,000 is illegal to build a house on, due to acreage restrictions. Thank you, realtor. FML

I would have done research with the town first. With any kind of construction you want to talk to people about ordinances first. The realtor just wants to sell sell sell.

Could always build a paintball course and get revenue from that

I think you should bitch your heart out to the BBB, and to the real estate company, and also, if they're on Yelp, give them one star. That'll show them!

You should've done your research Op. This is your fault.

Then what's the point of buying that vacant land if you can't really do anything with it? Geez that sucks.

The point of the FML went right over your head didn't it?

I think they mean why is that land for sale if you can't build.

Park a camper on it and crack a beer, private campground for you.

You should have checked with the local council first.

Just $20,000 for that amount of soil in California?

You can't build though, lowers the chances of of it being useful. although OP could figure something out, maybe buy the lot next to it and make a nice house with a big front/back yard.

Seriously? 20k for less than 1 acre is cheap in CA?! Here in VA, you can get 5 acres, with wooded perimeter and perked well for 20k...seems a pity to pay 20k for less than an acre of land that's most likely going to be underwater or part of an island w/ in the next 10 years :/

No shit, and who says the land he bought was even in the same State? Sounds like OP has enough money to blow that it's probably for a second home.

Uh...shrike...if op had enough $ to blow, then he probably wouldn't give a flying **** about 20k & this wouldn't be a fml...and how do you figure it's land for a second home...? It seems much more likely that op was trying to get a home as cheap as possible by buying a vacant lot & developing it

My question was asked sincerely.

I hope that you can sue the realtor. They obviously didn't do their job.

Or they did their job really well...

If u discovered this w/in a certain time frame u can dispute the purchase to get ur money back. Most property purchases can b nullified w/in 30-60 days if u have a good reason

*within. I'm sorry, I don't mean to be a grammar nazi about it but it was driving me nuts.

"w/" is shorthand for the word "with". Thus, "w/in" is shorthand for "within". You just attempted to correct something that was, in fact, already correct.

I know but it's still ******* annoying. People misuse the English language enough without being lazy & using shorthand. Thumb me down if you want, I really don't care. It's not going to hurt to take the extra few seconds to write the word properly.

There is a difference in using actual shorthand, which the commenter did, and text language. Shorthand is recognized as proper in the appropriate situation such as typing. Considering this is the Internet, I see it as appropriate. You just wanna be a douche.

Alice - "I know but it's still ******* annoying. People misuse the English language enough without being lazy & using shorthand...It's not going to hurt to take the extra few seconds to write the word properly." So, why didn't you take the extra few seconds to write the word "and" properly?
