I would say that the first two books are really sort of like stand alone adventures and, in my opinion, the most "meh" of the series by far. It's not until book 3, "Prisoner of Azkaban" that things really start to get interesting and the universe and lore start to form into its own entity.
shunning? Haha don't be so dramatic, I'm sure they just see you as a hipster now and most of that abuse was pure humor/banter. Nobody is going to seriously shun you for not liking a franchise. (If it makes you feel any better you're not alone)
I don't like Harry potter either. The books are written well, but they just aren't for me!
