Today, after months of being pestered to do so, I finally read the first Harry Potter book. I hated it. Upon hearing this, my girlfriend posted the fact on Facebook, where I immediately received tons of abuse and eventual shunning by my friends, family, and coworkers. My girlfriend just laughed. FML

Could have been worse, could have been twilight

So you're getting shunned for having an opinion of your own? Shit, the people you know are assholes!

One does not simply dislike Harry Potter. Re-read it and then change your mind. The abuse will stop. ONE DOES NOT SIMPLY DISLIKE HARRY POTTER. THIS IS BLASPHEMY. YOU MUST HAVE BEEN BRAINWASHED AS A CHILD.

I'm inclined to say YDI soley on the fact I'm such a massive Harry Potter fan and hopelessly devoted to the fandom. Then I remember that my own wife to be had the same reaction when trying to read the books and I wouldn't want anyone to shun her or verbally abuse her for not liking the series so I'm just going to pretend I didn't read this.

Man! Harsh! Are you sure you wanna be with someone who puts you through this much pain/crap for having an opinion that differs from hers??

I don't like you. Jk. :) But seriously.

I didn't feel the series until the third and fourth book, and after those it got excessively boring. I'd welcome shunning if people are so idiotic as to judge a friend or co-worker entirely based on personal taste. It's a little more understandable to pass quick judgment on strangers, but not friends, coworkers, etc. We all have guilty pleasures, a displeasure should be no different.

Can we all stop hating on twilight for a minute? The books weren't THAT bad, they were just done to death after the movies, and the same could be said for Harry Potter. Unfortunately everyone loves something until it becomes "mainstream" and then it's the most hated thing on earth, and frankly, it a little annoying.

That's not why I "hate" on Twilight. I dislike Twilight because it portrays an abusive and controlling relationship as something normal and desirable. That's not the type of message literature needs to convey to young people about relationships and love. Stephanie Meyer has also admitted to inserting lots of covert Mormon ideology into the novels and I don't like how she on one hand touts the value of her religion and remaining "pure" until marriage while on the other, essentially condoning stalking behavior and domestic violence.

I caught some of that but I figured it was because the book was marketed towards teens. I don't think stephanie herself meant for Edward to be manipulative and controlling but more of an overprotective significant other, but with or without that the story isn't without flaw. Bella has NO personality, AT ALL. Stephanie might as well have typed "insert your name here" for everywhere she was mentioned.

To be honest I never liked twilight even before it was mainstream. I tried to read the books my older sister gave me but in my opinion they sucked and I can't say it to a twilight fan without getting. "OMG HOWS CANS U NOT LIKE TWILIGHT?!"

I did like Harry Potter a lot, but... The first books are more fit for children, so if you start reading the series as an adult, I can understand that you find it boring. I read the first books at 12, and then grew up with the characters. I guess that if I still like all the books, it's partly because I became attached to the characters and the stories...

Come on, guys. He doesn't need to be bashed for his opinions. It's not like he's insulting anyone that enjoys the books.

I'm not much of a Harry Potter fan either. Your family, friends, and coworkers need to grow up and stop making such a fuss over a little kid's book. And really people? How did OP deserve it? Immature much?
