Today, I asked my boss for a raise, explaining that another shop offered me a job at a higher rate, but I would stay if he would offer me the same. Instead, he fired me then called the other shop and said I was fired for failing a drug test. FML

WHOA!! What in the actual **** is wrong with your boss?! It's been a long time since my jaw has dropped at an FML!

Your boss is an asshole! There has to be someone you can contact because he is out of line.

...FYL! But why did you give him the info of what the shop is...?

YDI for telling him where you got offered a job

Although I despise the very idea of employers being able to force such intrusion into your privacy on you (in Germany this still would be unthinkable)... I guess your best chance would be to immediately talk to that other boss, explain the situation and offer an immediate drug test. And after the test suit your old bosses backside off.

So you're going to sue the **** out of him for defamation of character, right? I ask because that is one of the most obvious actionable offenses I have ever seen and only an idiot would let him get away with it.

Yep pretty sure what your boss did is illegal

Lawyer the **** up man, you could take him for all he's worth.

Get a lawyer. Because its against the law for a former employer or the present one to do something like that. And have him prove it. If he can't then sue like crazy for any and every little thing you and your lawyer can think of. First comes to mind is defamation of character and undue stress. Good luxk

This could have been avoided if you haven't mentioned the other store's name.

I'm hoping the OP can afford the lawyer. Unfortunately, also trying to prove it something else. If you were fired for something at that place is a reference I think in some cases they can disclose why you were fired. I'm still surprised though the job would go so far as to lie about a failed drug test. That sounds kind of odd. Especially knowing that it could get them taken to court.
