He's probably just attempting humor. Sometimes it's hard for parents to accept their kids for who they really are and sometimes attempting humor may be his way of lightening the situation to let you know that he doesn't judge you. If he says it in a mean way well then he's probably just being a dick. But considering the situation I doubt it's the latter.
