Today, I found a credit card at my job. As store policy goes, we have to cut up lost cards immediately after finding them to protect the cardholders. As I grab the scissors and cut, my manager calls out, "Has anyone seen my credit card?" FML

Didn't you recognize your bosses name on the card...?

The name on the card should have given it away that it was your bosses card. If the name was the same as an employee then you should ask if it's theirs or not before playing Edward Scissorhands.

While I agree the OP deserved it for not checking the name and/or not knowing their boss' name, I do want to say the cut-up policy is not necessarily bad. When I managed retail (admittedly, almost 20 years ago), the information we got from banks and credit card companies often stated that cutting up was the best/recommended course of action. There is a lot of fraud and stolen information going around these days, and despite the inconvenience, this can protect someone from a much worse inconvenience, especially if one's coworkers are kinda shifty.

Is the company not responsible enough to hold a card for somebody? What the hell! I would be pissed about having to go through the process of getting another!

You should come clean and say that you were following company policy. You can't get fired for following company policy. The chief of medicine at one of CPMCs campuses called in to see how his daughter was doing and the person who answered the phone told him, knowing who he was, that if he were really who he said he was, he would know that such a request was not HIPAA compliant.
