Today, I found a credit card at my job. As store policy goes, we have to cut up lost cards immediately after finding them to protect the cardholders. As I grab the scissors and cut, my manager calls out, "Has anyone seen my credit card?" FML

Didn't you recognize your bosses name on the card...?

The name on the card should have given it away that it was your bosses card. If the name was the same as an employee then you should ask if it's theirs or not before playing Edward Scissorhands.

Uh, did you not look at the name on the card?

Why didn't you just look at the name on the card and see it was your managers?!?

Not technically your fault, dude. You were just playing by store policy, but you should've looked.

Credit cards have names on them, you know.

That is the dumbest store policy I've ever heard. Store policy should be that they are given to someone who will get a hold of the card holder, or the bank the card belongs to. I suppose it's not your fault but you should probably have looked at the name on the card.

I worked at a store that had the same policy. Though we didn't cut them up. We have them to the manager to do. That part wasn't policy. It's just none of us min wage employees wanted to deal with the angry customer. The manager usually waited a day or so to do it in case they came back. Locked them in a safe. Easy enough to verify with id if it's going to the right person. I always found the policy silly since almost every store in the mall put the carbons in a white bag in front of the store every night. Not sure if they were just being trashed or destroyed. But seeing that, I never used a card at that mall.

Metthew, every time I have ever called the issuing bank in that situation, they instructed me to cut up the card.

Yeah I feel like someone made this up...like all the other posts pretty much :p

If you couldn't realize or recognize your own bosses name on the card, then sorry but YDI.

This is an unlawful policy. The card doesn't belong to the store, so the store has no right to destroy it. Regardless of customer safety. Now, the bank the card is drawn off of has the authority, so proper etiquette is to call the bank and tell them you found a card, they will advise the destruction of the card, and inform the card holder on your behalf. Destroying property that isn't yours is illegal, regardless of your reasons (or how small the offense is) The bank won't press charges its not worth it for them, but it doesn't change right from wrong.

#82 if you actually call a bank or credit company they will tell you that if the card is lost that the finder of the card can cut it up at there discretion with no penalty held against them. And no it is not unlawful. If your gonna say something make sure you know what you are talking about

Actually, it is unlawful to destroy other people's property. I work for a bank And, yes the bank will say to destroy it, after all it is the banks property, only them and the card holder have that right to destroy the card, no one else. The proper thing to do is call the bank, and let them know it was found, ten follow their instructions. They will get a hold of the card holder. So, you get your facts straight. It is, and always will be unlawful to destroy other people's property. Regardless if its common practice, or in the customers best interest or not. Just because no one presses charges, doesn't for a second Make it any less correct.

You were following store policies. It's not your problem.
