Today, I found a wallet containing an ID card. I managed to track down the owner, who now is threatening to call the police if I don't return the 400 dollars that he insists were also in it. FML

Not trying to be smart but you just said so yourself that a lie detector test is inadmissible in court. Police cannot make an arrest based on a polygraph let alone enforce charges. Investigators use them to break cases.

Let him call the police, then simply tell them what happened. If there is no proof otherwise they can't do anything. He can't even prove he had $400 in his wallet. Besides, what kind of idiot keeps that much money in their wallet anymore?
