Today, I ordered a Diet Coke with my meal from a fast food restaurant. Turns out, they didn't give me diet. My blood sugar spiked and I was sick for hours later. I'm a diabetic. FML

hello, ive been a diabetic for 16 years and i am almost 17. if you say that one drink of coke made you sky rocket you would be wrong, unless you were not looking after your body. diabetics can take small amounts of sugar you just need to maintain yourself, if you thought hey i am going to get fast food and checked you sugar lvl before you went in you woulda seen that your sugar woulda been sitting on a guess 15 - 19 range already and the drink and the meal would have spiked your sugar through the roof, and while you were sick didnt you think well hold on something is wrong here and go and check your bsl. which you then would have realised that it was actully fairly high and you would have been able to medicate. and also this thing isnt really a thing to windge abt... wow your sugar is high... go for a run or a walk get your bls down and keep it there! look after yourself, take care.

you seem incredibly misinformed on how much sugar is in one coke. Here's a clue: A LOT.

if you have really been a diabetic for that long and believe what you do then i feel sorry for you. Number 1 Pop is loaded with carbohydrates. pop from fast food resturants has almost 80 carbs to a medium(at least in canada) you are really dumb for assuming that 80 carb unchecked won't skyrocket your blood sugar. ill admit the pop will take about 45min-an hour(at least in me. everyones body is different) to take full effect. but 80 crabs unchecked will send you from 5 to 20. That is bad for you. Number 2. if you have a blood sugar above 16 then exercise is the worst thing for you. You are supposed to drink water when you have a high Blood sugar to dilute you blood making the concentration of sugar go down in proportion to amount of blood and to flush you system of keytones. exercise will make you sweat and you will lose water which comes from your blood making the sugar in the blood more concentrated! it is true that some of the sugar will be used up during exercise but if you don't supplement your lost water by drinking some the ration between the two rates will favour loss of water rater than use of sugar. Ps my moms a doctor and her friend is the doctor i go to see for my 6 mouth check ups at the diabetic clinic. if you disagree with me, BITE ME! endnote sorry this is suposed to be a response to the comment above the one it is actually a response to.

you could sue for this, big time :) on the other hand that sucks!

On one hand, they made a very stupid mistake in giving you the wrong coke. On the other hand, you should have checked to make sure. In both cases this situation was easy to prevent. For one, Diet Coke cans are a different colour and have "diet" written on them.

OP was ordering at a fastfood place, where the drinks come from 'fountains' and are put into identical paper/plastic/Styrofoam cups. You don't usually get cans or bottles.

Right. A diabetic in a fast-food restaurant. Are you suicidal by any chance?

weird. im diabetic and drinking regular coke without injecting for it wouldnt have that many adverse effects. yeah, i would pee a lot and be thirsty, but theres something that can solve that called insulin. so surely you could recognise the symptoms, test your blood sugars, and inject for it?

ok thats really dumb. your supposed to take insulin before you eat/drink food. if you wait until you begin feeling the advese affects of high blood sugar then you be blind twenty years after your dianosed and in a wheel chair by 30 years

I have to say YDI because you would be able to tell if it was diet or not after the first sip in most cases. I am allergic to the diet drinks and have the opposite thing happen all the time but I notice after the first sip and don't drink the whole drink as a result.

why would you risk the idiots that work at a fast food place actually giving you what you asked for? they always get your order wrong. and if your diabetes is that bad you shouldn't have soda at all so YDI.

Could you not tell the difference when you were drinking it? 0_0

most of my family is diabetic so I know what it's like. you need to work on telling diet from regular. diet drinks have such a distinct taste and smell that I can sniff the difference.
