Today, I ordered a Diet Coke with my meal from a fast food restaurant. Turns out, they didn't give me diet. My blood sugar spiked and I was sick for hours later. I'm a diabetic. FML

what the hell is a regular person doing at a fast food restauraunt? Guess what? Fast food is bad for EVERYONE, not just certain types of people.

There is a clear taste difference between diet and regular, how did you not notice?

not in every fast food rest!!!!! some are watered down and its hard to tell the difference, I know from being a diabetic in this situation!!!

Because in fast foods, the soda is so icy and full of water that you do not even taste the difference between a pepsi and a coca cola... so the difference between pepsi max and regular pepsi, wtf

Okay so, OP orders a diet coke. OP doesn't get a diet coke, he gets regular. He drinks it and then gets sick for hours. Doesn't anyone else see that the point of the story was not the fact that it was fast food, but that the OP ordered one thing and got another? That's just bad service. As for people who are claiming fast food is horrible and loaded with carbs, that's not exactly true. At least here in the US, there are many salads and more healthier items to choose from. And, while carbs do get metabolized as sugar, it's possible for a diabetic to adjust their insulin if they know they're going to eat something starchy beforehand. However, maybe the OP didn't plan for the diet coke screwup, as that's a simple thing to order and he counted on the person taking the order to deliver the product correctly. Now, the diet coke thing aside, I don't leave it up to other people to cook my food for me. While I don't have diabetes, I have a food allergy and other things and I prefer to stay away from the bad stuff. I know not everyone has the time to cook all their meals at home, every day, but I feel like I'm in better control of what I'm consuming when I do that.

The thing is that OP may have not been alone, and was with a group of friends, non diabetic friends, who said "let's go get some burgers/chicken".. Type 1 can eat fast food as long as they plan it with their insulin (and do not put sauce on everything, of course..)

I'm surprised that you didn't notice, considering how different the taste is between diet and regular soda. Still, you should be entitled to compensation. Unfortunately, unless you can prove it, you probably won't get it. FYL.

How can you not taste the difference? I always order Diet Coke and McDonald's has screwed it up plenty of times and given me Coke. I could taste it on the first sip. I'd cut you some slack if it was Pepsi and Diet Pepsi because that's a little harder to distinguish but Coke and Diet Coke can easily be distinguished between.

It sucks. I know. I am a diabetic, and I have stopped eating fast food because of it. Sorry about the B/S spike, I hate when that happens. And as for all of you who said "Adjust your insulin" and stuff like that, it's not always that easy. And some sodas you cannot tell if they are diet or not. It's not our fault that things like this happen, and "Adjusting your insulin" isn't always the solution. So, please, don't try and tell the diabetics of the world how to manage it. It happens, and all you can do is just go with it. It's not something you plan for.

My only comment: if someone with a peanut allergy died because a place screwed up their order and gave them something with peanuts in it, no one would blame the person. They'd blame the restaurant.

but it's up to the people who cook the food to ensure that the food is prepared right, and usually with food allergies, something is mentioned before hand. I also ask if products have eggs in them because I'm allergic and I don't want to feel sick, it's not fun. If I say that I have an allergy, and someone gives me something that supposedly egg free, and it's not, then how is it my fault? It's bad service to give someone something different than what they ordered. That being said, I try not to take chances so I eat at home and cook everything myself, but once in awhile I like to eat out as a treat.

How on earth can you not taste the difference? Diet has that awful aftertaste that never goes away.
