Today, I told my parents I was thinking about joining the army. They looked at each other and laughed for about 10 minutes straight. I wasn't joking. FML

Maybe they were laughing to hide their worries?

Thinking and doing are two different things. Show them what you're really made of!

59 if he wants to serve let him serve you know just as well as I do being a vet that's there's no better feeling than standing up for your home tho we might not agree on as a nation being at war but where would our nation be without the 1% of Americans who stood up to fight for our freedom, think about that.

Please tell me more about how you fought for the freedom if the US in Iraq.

I told my parents I want to enlist in the Navy so I understand how you feel. Go with your gut! You need to make sure you are the one that's happy. Not anyone else.

You shouldn't be selfish and only make yourself happy. Think about others too

Op is thinking about others if he joins

sorry about your parents OP, but thank you for choosing to serve our country

If you do join thank you for what you will be doing and making that sacrifice

prove them wrong! my parents don't think ill make it either

I'm thinking they laughed because they think you can do better. Go in as an officer though. I support you fully.

Am I the only one aroun here who thinks thats a wasted life?! (with all respect.. no wait, no respect for your patriotic american way of thinking) And btw I ve been to the army but only because its mandatory where I live - it sucks! unless you like being commanded and dont use your own brain.

#71: It's called a stereotype, asshole.

71, I'm Canadian. But I guess I fit into the "patriotic American way of thinking" group you so obviously despise. Here's some food for thought... Unless you're self employed, you'll always be at the mercy of your superiors. So your arguement there, I believe, is invalid. Furthermore, in the military, your "boss" is the individual tasked with the well being of every individual in the country. While I confess, they may not always seem to promote that stance, it sure beats working for someone just trying to make the quickest buck they can so they can afford their fifth Ferrari. I'm sorry you had to serve your country, and obviously hated it, but don't dare hate on those who choose to do so willingly.

While I won't insult the US, I do question the army. If you want to serve your countrymen, become a police officer to protect them. Going into the army means killing for geo-strategic aims and occupying other -previously free- nations. You will protect the country, but not your fellow Americans.

I'm sorry for the insult. I agree with #103. It's the US foreign policy that make me angry, not the people! I'm sure the people want to live in peace just as everywhere else. but I question the intentions of people who join the army. I think they have a wrong idea of "serving" the country. There is noone you served in Iraq, let alone bring "peace" or "freedom"...

Join. Serve your country then hang out with us cool vets when you get out.
