Today, I was driving on the highway and a cop had his radar gun out. The woman in front of me panics and slams her brakes on, causing me to rear end her. The cop cited me for "tailgating" and I have to pay for the damages on both of our cars. FML

Thats the technical definition of tailgating. If you're so close to the other car that in a situation in which the car in front of you suddenly breaks, and you rear end the car in front of you, that would be tailgating. Really, what do you think tailgating is if its not exactly the situation you're in now?

I cant stand people who slam on their brakes whenever they see a cop. Especially when the dudes on the other side of the highway

and #118, actually yeah, that is our job as drivers.

it sounds like u were tailgating if she applied her brakes and u couldn't stop to avoid the crash...YDI

Well, you must have been tailgating OR not paying attention if you rearended her.

Well if you were tailgating, it is in fact your fault.

Stop blaming others for your poor driving skills. There are many reasons the driver in front of you could slam on their brakes, but none of those reasons matter in the big picture. Your only job is to plan ahead for this possibility and drive defensively.

#128: Drivers that are too cautious get into more accidents :) Yeah, we're supposed to pay attention, but noting everything everyone does every second gets you in trouble just as much as not paying any attention.

Hahahaha. I love how pissed off people are. Way better than the FML, actually.

A 3:1 ratio of people who think this isn't the submitter's fault?? Wtf? Does no one here know how to drive? If you rear-end someone, it's ALWAYS your fault for following too close! I learned this in driver's ed. when I was 15 or 16. Of course there is always the exception of someone who cuts you off and immediately slams on the brakes before you can react to them getting in front of you, but that obviously isn't the case here. #133: I had to read the previous comments to see if you were trying to make a joke. How is NOT tailgating considered being too cautious? I'm young; please enlighten me to the advantages of tailgating.

since no one seems to be in a good mood on this FML, i would like to take a moment to appreciate comment #47. smiles.
