Actually, if you weren't following her so closely, you would of had time to stop when she suddenly slammed her breaks. That, my friend, is in fact tailgating.
You were probably tailgating her though. You have to keep enough distance so when people do slam on there brakes you have time to stop too, without hitting the car infront. I don't even drive and I know that's basic stuff. Learn to drive.
You should keep enough distance between you and the car in front of you, that even when he or she goes full on the brakes you can still stop without hitting them.

Thats the technical definition of tailgating. If you're so close to the other car that in a situation in which the car in front of you suddenly breaks, and you rear end the car in front of you, that would be tailgating. Really, what do you think tailgating is if its not exactly the situation you're in now?
I cant stand people who slam on their brakes whenever they see a cop. Especially when the dudes on the other side of the highway
