Wait until they're leaving on their trip. Ask them if they have flight insurance, then begin to laugh ... in a very evil way. At least it'll make them uncomfortable for a while.
wow it sucks that you got hit by a truck but your parnets on top of that want to go an vacation (i'm guessing leaving you at home) they sound like jerks
Whoops accidentally clicked YDI but didn't mean it.
I don't doubt that your parents were serious--I know parents (not mine) who would do the same thing, or simply wait until the money came in and spend it on illegal drugs. So, the good news is this: It could be WORSE! The bad news is that you, as you know, have parents that are incredibly tasteless. And since insurance money usually comes from the driver who was responsible, and it was determined to be the truck driver's fault (and you were on foot)--the money will be paid to you. And even at age 13, you can cash a check with your parent present. But there are a few problems with telling the parents that it is OP's money: if OP is a minor (and we're assuming so) then any bank account has to have a parent/guardian attached. So, if OP decided to put the money away for college, say in a bank, the parents could turn around and pull the money out using withdrawal slips. Now, when they yell at you for being disrespectful, you can look at them coldly and say, "I was hit by a truck, received insurance money--that you took to VEGAS!" Even if they somehow manage to beat the odds and win, I'd still be angry as hell. FYL
Strictly speaking, we don't know how well off these parents are. Obviously they have the money to pay the hospital bills that the insurance money should otherwise be spent on. I can't see insurance paying significantly more than the hospital bills (Why should they? He's not dead or particularly injured). The kid is already in the hospital, so the bills are coming, so either its not that much money and they decided to pay it themselves and use the "free" money for a vacation, in which case no harm no foul, OR they're somehow committing insurance fraud and the kid should distance himself as much as possible from it (at least definitely not profit from it)... Am I missing something?
Holy cow, that's so weird. When I was 14 I got hit by a truck in the crosswalk while walking to my school bus. I broke my leg. However, my parents let me keep all my money, since, you know, it's mine... also I didn't get it until I turned 18. Seriously your parents are messed...

You know, even if you're a minor (guessing here), you CAN sue your parents if they use the money for anything that isn't used DIRECTLY for your own well-being.
Awww...they really love you. Now you have no reason to spend any hard earned money you make later in life on them! 8D
