Next time, focus on having a good time. All of that is up to you, not up to your date. After the meal and movies, tell him thanks for the evening and leave. If he calls again, take his call and tell him you had a great time but you're not interested in pursuing anything romantic. Please use your Business voice so he gets the drift. Let people go, don't let them think they have a chance when they don't.

Not sure about most other dudes out there, but if a girl isn't into me I generally understand if they simply tell me so it doesn't bother me and I respect them more for it.

I do understand finding it hard to tell the truth when you knew it would hurt his feelings. I probably would have said I wasn't feeling well, and tell him later if he was persistent. Not saying its right, just don't know if I'd have the guts to say that I don't like him to his face.
