Today, I went to visit some family out of state for my niece's birthday. I couldn't think of what to get an 8-year-old so I got her a Barbie doll. Everyone else got her money, iPods, game consoles, etc. When she got to mine she asked "how do I turn it on?" Then threw it away when she couldn't. FML

Really? I'd love to have a Barbie doll.

Although it was ungrateful of your niece to react that way, I'm not sure I agree with all the "we didn't have that when I was a kid and kids don't need it now" comments. I'm pretty sure every generation has said that about the one that follows. I remember my parents being astonished by the stuff that was around for kids and that was in the 70s/80s Technology and hi tech toys are part of life for young kids. It's natural that they want it. While it's debatable if they need it or not, the same could be said for everyone. I both want and own lots of things I don't need. Does that mean I shouldn't have them?

The point is, is that regardless of what you were given as a gift, you should be appreciative of it.

its not the fact she got tech or cash its the fact she threw away a barbie because it wasn't tech when I was a kid if I got something I didn't like I thanked my relative who got it for me and just put it in the back of my closet until it was time for goodwill donations this little brat didn't even wait for her Uncle/Aunt to leave

That's so sad. What has happened to kids these days :(

Wtf kind of 8 year old is that? If that girl spends her life spoiled then she won't work and know how it feels to earn things because she gets then for free.

Thats completely ridiculous.. she's ****** 8! She shouldn't be gettin any of that shit. She should be playin outside playing bein a kid. She is raising her kid the wrong way.

I remember a time when people said Barbies were ridiculously commercialized/expensive/high end, etc. Same thing they're saying about iPods, etc. now. However, this child really needs more discipline to at least learn to PRETEND she loves anything she's given as a gift.

And least you were the most logical one, and gave her something she deserved at her age.

Get a box from a phone or any kind of box and just put rocks in it.

Don't feel bad I would think she wouldn't do that in front of your face Tactless
