I believe this is good for your karma. You're having the opportunity to help him ease himself out of the closet while you make a major sacrifice. It could have been much more difficult for him. This is definitely a blow to anyone's ego, but the potential now for learning ego-subjugation is likely better than before this experience. Remember that when you lose something, it's so you can receive something new and better (or at least as good). We lose to gain, not to lose.
