Today, my daughter turned 11. Since she LOVES Harry Potter, I decided to write her an acceptance letter to Hogwarts. When she saw the letter, she screamed and showed me. When she found out I wrote it, she told me she hated me, started crying, and stepped on my foot. FML

Okay, everyone seems to be forgetting that eleven year olds ARE idiots. Even if they know the book is fiction, they still WANT it to be real- and if the outside world gives them a glimpse of hope that maybe it's more than fiction, they WILL believe it because they WANT it to be real. I waited for my Hogwarts letter when I was turning eleven. I didn't really think I'd get one, and when I didn't I wasn't crushed, but if I HAD gotten one I'd probably have shit myself. This mother obviously has never been obsessed with something like 11 year olds can be with this book series. That, or she's just a bitch. She should have known better than to have made the poor kid think she was going off to live in a magical world and then taken it away. That's horrible. Just take her to see the damn movie.

WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT?!?!?!?!?! Ugg I can't even begin to tell you how terrible that is. The poor little girl! An eleven year old really has no way of knowing that was fake because the excitement blinds them ;- )

Well, at least you had the right intentions. (and how many people will actually admit they secretly wished for their Hogwarts when they turned 11?)

**** all of you at 11 i wanted so badly to believe in these things, even if common sense told me they didnt exist. so a letter from Hogwarts?? I would've done the same thing. shes only 11, this was a horrendous idea plus, who pulls a ******* PRANK on someone when it's their BIRTHDAY? lame and low.

For everyone saying it was mean... OP never said she TOLD her daughter that she had written it, just that she found out. I don't think she actually confessed to writing it. And it's a cute idea, whether she believed it or not.

that's even worse....just letting your kid continue to think that they were going to hogwarts?

The real FYL here is that your 11 year old daughter believes that Harry Potter and his school of wizards exists.

I can see the FYL and the YDI in the situation... for one, it was a nice thought, and you didn't mean to give her false hope, you just meant to put a smile on her face. For another... well... You see, young kids get into this shit. My best friend and I in primary school? We actually talked each other into believing it was all real. We would even sometimes talk about how great it would be when we turned eleven and went to hogwarts. There's the YDI. But here's the reason you didn't deserve it: We grew up. We all but forgot about hogwarts. We still enjoyed the movies (while they were good) and talked, on ocassion, about the book, but we stopped wishing for that letter. Then I remember one night when I was twelve, I came across some Harry Potter fanfiction, and my heart sank. I realized that that place I believed in when I was eight hadn't accepted me. It couldn't; because it wasn't there. It hurts, but your daughter has to realize it sometime. She'll forgive you, trust me. It's actually quite nice that she got a time she could believe. She'll remember it in a fond light, I promise.

It's the OP's fault all the way. I'm 13 and I'm obsessed with HP. Of course I know it isn't real, but I still have dreams that I get an acceptance letter in the mail. I would've done a lot more than step on my parent's foot and said I hate you if they had done that. She isn't stupid, she just has a good imagination. YDI =P

how did you think she was goin to react when she found out that it wasn't real, that was just mean

That's a cute idea. Man, what's the deal with the kid believing Hogwarts is real? She gonna run into a brick wall trying to get to Platform 9 3/4 next? Worry about that.

seriously. YDI. sure, an 11 year old should know that Hogwarts isn't real...but what made you think it was a good idea to enforce the idea that it WAS real by sending her a letter. if i had gotten an acceptance letter when i turned 11, and then found out it wasn't even real, i would be completely crushed. it was just a bad idea overall.

i wanted to do that to a friend when i was 11... but didnt CAUSE THATS JUST ******* EVIL!
