Today, my lawyer threatened to sue me because I can't afford his bill, which he sent to me after getting me out of a lawsuit. FML

well he saved your ass so pay your ******* bill

Today, the pimple-faced sandwich artist at Subway threatened not to give me my food until I paid him seven dollars, which he asked for after preparing my sandwich for me. FML.

This is ironic, not really an FML. I think thats why most people don't get it.

You can't just hire someone and not pay them. Even if you assume they're ******* rich. YDI for being a cheapskate.

pay up. this is not an FML bit I say YDI just because if you want to lawyer up you have to pay up. nothing comes for free

Yeah, it's totally ****** up that you have pay someone for doing you a service.

you said he sent you a bill after... that's how it works, because most lawyers are hourly, and bill you based on the number of hours you work. YDI if you were too stupid to ******* ask how much it's gonna cost you... this is not an FML this is an you're a ******* idiot.

wats OP mean?!? offended person??? lolz idk :)

Funnily enough, this very issue (the cost of litigation outweighing the benefit gained by winning the lawsuit) came up in my Property class earlier today. It's a bit humorous until you realize that it's actually a big legal issue. Everybody - including criminals and idiots - has the right to a fair chance at trial, and because the law is so complex that generally means hiring a lawyer. And then you run into issues like this. People think that lawyers rip them off because even a simple consultation can be pricey, but they don't realize just how much work goes into finding the answers. The lawyer has to research the problem, which is time-consuming and costly (due to the subscription databases that lawyers use), figure out what the relevant statutory and common laws are and then try to apply them to the instant case. That doesn't happen by driving around in Porsches or sitting on beaches drinking mai tais.

i think what the OP means is that he & the lawyer had a set price & then after the lawyer did the work he sent him the bill & it was more than what they agreed on.

There is nothing in the FML to indicate that... you can decide that's what it means if you want, but that's coming from you, not the FML.

Don't be a deadbeat. Call him up and work something out. You could probably convince him to let you pay in installments. You made use of his services and they were obviously satisfactory. Now it's time to pay up. Your lawyer isn't running a charity; practicing law is his livelihood. This situation really is no different from working all week only to have your boss say that he can't afford your paycheck.
