Today, while I was working at a supermarket, a kid started to cry in line because he couldn't get candy. Since we have free lollipops behind the desk, I gave him one. His mom complained to my manager and said I was grooming her child. FML

While the mom overreacted, she may have had a reason for not giving him candy. Better safe than sorry and ask.

You are kind of encouraging brattiness when you do that. YDI

What does grooming her child mean?

It means when someone tries to get the child to trust them over a long period of time so that they can sexually take advantage of the child.

Usually when we have candy or something to give away, I ask the parent if it's ok first before I give it to the kid. You never know what the situation is and it's more respectful that way.

shouldn't have gone over the mother like that but holy **** accusing someone of being a child molester is horrible. that's a whole new level of messed up.

I can see that what you tried to do was nice, and the parent should not have made such an awful accusation against you, but in the future, you should definitely ask first.

Grooming is a bit extreme but did you ask the parent first if the kid was allowed to have the lollipop?

You ALWAYS have to ask the parent first. If that kid was a diabetic you could cause him serious problems. My ex's little one would prob have to go back to the hospital if he eats one.

You should have asked mom if it was ok first. No parent wants their authority undermined by someone. What happens next time mom says no and the kid puts up a fuss? He's hoping someone will cave and give him what he wants.
