Traumatic

Today, I started my community service at the dog pound. I like animals so I thought it would be a good place to do it. As I arrived they were throwing dogs that had been euthanized into a dump truck to be taken to a landfill. That was my job for the day. FML

I sure hope the OP is a guy since you all are referring to them as one

OK I'm just going to say it. Since you said community service and not volunteering, I'm going to assume it's court mandated community service. I bet nothing will convince you to not commit another crime more than shoveling dead dogs will. I'm a frequent animal shelter volunteer and can't imagine doing that part of the job. But, I find it hard to feel bad for anyone other than the euthanized animals in this scenario. YDI for getting your butt arrested in the first place.

No, you fail for assuming. Community service also needs to be completed in many high schools, so OP could still be a teenager in high school.

Exactly. In the school I used to go to (**** that place!), you had to complete 40 ******* HOURS of community service.

Actually, I went to schools that required it as well. We called it school-required community service so people wouldn't think it was court mandated.

My school didn't differentiate; it was called "community service" just the same. Just throwing that out there.

Wow... At our school we had to do 144 hours of community service/volunteer work in order to get the seal on our diploma.

Are you special? Euthanizing dogs is not torturing them. There are so many dogs in the pounds that they just don't have the money to support all of them. They have to put those animals they can't support down. That's just the ugly truth of life.

I'm sorry, but what did you expect? That's what the pound does.

You must either live in a smaller city without an animal population problem or the facility doesn't tell you what's really going on. Other than the few no-kill shelters in our city, which can only support a small amount of animals, all of our pounds are so overrun that a scenario like the OP posted is common. My bf works for the SPCA, so I know this firsthand. Unfortunately, there are lots of ghettos in our city and that is were most of the dogs come from. These people don't spay/neuter their pets and let them run wild in the streets. With so much of this going on and fewer adopters/donators, there isn't another choice when it comes to limited money.

Weelllllll lets see. over-populate the world with dogs? you know that pounds cant afford to have all those dogs. and if nobody wants them, what do you do? cant leave them in the wild. they can hurt people. sooo that happens. oh well
